ASN Routing Profile: interpretation and next steps

ASN Routing Profile summarizes publicly visible prefix scale, address space, and RIS-observed neighbours for an ASN. It is useful for establishing a baseline before peering, migration, or monitoring work.

What this check answers

Observed neighbours are derived from BGP paths and do not prove a commercial relationship. Counts can also be influenced by route collectors and visibility, so use them as operational evidence rather than a business directory.

Workflow

  1. Enter an ASN.
  2. Review IPv4/IPv6 prefix scale and unique observed neighbour counts.
  3. Inspect the announced-prefix inventory and validate selected prefixes with RPKI and IRR.

Example and limits

A sudden change in announced prefix count or neighbour composition can identify a routing change worth investigating.

  • Public BGP does not expose every private or backup session.
  • Prefix count is not a measure of traffic volume or network quality.

They are observed AS-path neighbours, not necessarily bilateral commercial peers.

Why is the list large?

RIS sees paths across many collectors and can include uncertain relationships.
